Cities of the future combine mega regions and self-contained neighbourhoods

By 2050, 70% of the world’s 10 billion-strong population will live in urban areas. This influx of people into cities is leading urban planners to consider how a city of the future would best fit new requirements. Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has identified several working areas: in a densely developed urban hub, sustainable land use within and outside its borders will help people thrive by providing water, food and recreation; modular smart buildings will quickly transform to meet changing housing, industrial or business needs; neighbourhoods will be self-contained so as to limit the need for public transport and to foster community life and interaction; urban hubs will need to be resilient with city centres moving inland, away from rising seas.
