Since 1 January 2025, all municipal buildings in the city of Chicago have been running on renewable energy. This covers more than 400 structures in total, including 98 fire stations, two international airports and two of the world’s largest wastewater treatment plants. A massive 593-megawatt solar farm co-financed by the city provides 70% of this energy, with the remaining 30% covered by purchased renewable energy credits. The city’s target is to reduce its carbon emissions by 290,000 tonnes a year, equivalent to removing 62,000 cars from the roads. This is contributing to Chicago’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 62% by 2040.
