When eco-design is applied to major energy production installations… In Karlshammar in southern Sweden, the European energy supplier E.ON is replacing an electrical power plant dating from the 1960s with a building constructed entirely from sustainable materials and reused components: timber, concrete with improved climate resistance, low-carbon steel, regenerated oil, etc.

The installation will be equipped with two new transformers, a medium-voltage transformer station, and control equipment, all free from SF6 gas insulation, which has an environmental impact 23,500 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. Even the construction machinery will run on HVO 100 hydrotreated vegetable oil. Overall, the power plant’s carbon footprint is expected to be 17% smaller than for a conventional installation of comparable size. Commissioning of the facility is due in 2026.
