Cécile Maisonneuve, President of La Fabrique de la cité, is one of the best observers of the challenges facing today’s urban areas, first and foremost traffic congestion and its impact on urban quality of life and public health. She says that it would be wrong to assume that new technologies can, by themselves, solve a problem of such complexity. Digital technology is not a miracle solution; instead, it “supports other solutions,” she says, particularly economic (levies and charges) and physical (infrastructure) policies such as those introduced in Singapore, the only urban area to have eliminated urban congestion.
