Morocco is championing female representation in engineering schools and careers
Reading time: 1 min
According to a UNESCO report published in 2021, 42% of engineers in Morocco are women. This is far higher than in France, where the proportion of female graduates from engineering schools tops out at 30% (http://www.cdefi.fr/fr/la-cdefi/chiffres-cles). Morocco’s excellent integration of women into engineering careers is largely the result of cultural factors: mathematics is considered the most prestigious discipline, enhancing social mobility and ensuring professional success. Preparatory classes and engineering schools are therefore hugely popular with girls, many of whom achieve excellent results in science subjects at baccalaureate level. It is worth noting that female representation in engineering careers in both Tunisia and Algeria is also far higher than the OECD average.
