An article by our partner site Usbek & Rica

1965 in the United States, 1999 in France and 31 July 2012 in India: in each of these years, major geographical areas suffered power blackouts. The outages – caused by technical, political or economic issues – made a deep impression and underlined the importance of good infrastructure. Today, we cannot imagine going several days or months without electricity. But when power fails due to faulty maintenance, malicious tampering or unusual weather, solutions are few and far between, and those available are sometimes difficult to implement. Is a global outage to be expected in future? We look back at the worst blackouts in modern times.

Since 2010, Usbek & Rica has reported on the upheavals of our times across all areas. Through its quarterly magazine, digital media, and events and through its work to support companies and municipalities, Usbek & Rica has pursued its goal of democratising knowledge and bringing people together to face the major issues of the future.
