In March 2025, INRAE, the French National Agriculture, Food and Environment Research Institute, and INRIA, the National Computing and Automation Research Institute, jointly announced the launch of the Twinfarms project. Backed with €3 million in finance by a consortium of different scientific and institutional partners, this 48-month programme is rolling out nine digital twin demonstrators in various locations across France. The aim of this collaborative project combining expertise in mathematics, computing, agronomy, ecology, soil biology and zootechnics is to assist day-to-day tactical decision-making and multi-year strategic planning for agroecological transition: optimised resource management (water, energy, fertilisers); protecting soil fertility; early disease detection; and a reduced carbon footprint.
