The Energy Transition Institute (ITE) SuperGrid Institute of Villeurbanne (Rhône) recently commissioned a short-circuit generator capable of producing up to 200,000 volts – equivalent to the power of a generation plant – for several seconds in order to perform testing at extremely high voltages. This test rig is unique in Europe and is particularly useful for testing high-voltage transformer parts such as those used in offshore wind by subjecting them to short-circuits. This project attracted €46 million in investment, financed from ITE funds with €10 million of backing from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, France’s leading producer of electricity and renewable energies.
