For the first time in three years, absolute emissions from eight particularly polluting sectors have decreased slightly (down 0.9%), according to the Net Zero Industry Tracker published by the World Economic Forum in December 2024. The eight sectors analysed in this joint study with Accenture represent around 40% of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: aviation, maritime transport, road transport, steelmaking, cement, aluminium, commodity chemicals, and oil & gas. Emissions from these eight sectors have dropped 4.1% over five years, with a faster fall of 1.2% in the past year. The reduction has been particularly notable in the aluminium, cement, chemicals, aviation and road transport sectors.
