To centralise healthcare data in real time and improve efficiency, personalisation and safety in patient care – these are the aims of NOVI. This intelligent platform developed and installed by Verkerk Healthcare combines personalised information process with respect for patient privacy.

To meet ever-increasing challenges in the healthcare sector, the Dutch firm Verkerk Healthcare (a subsidiary of VINCI Energies Netherlands) has developed an innovative solution in the healthcare information platform NOVI, combined with intelligent multi-sensor systems. This technological advance is enabling healthcare establishments in the Netherlands to optimise their monitoring of residents and intervene more effectively.

“NOVI is an integrated information platform that gathers data from different sources – home automation systems, sensors, applications – in a single, intelligible environment,” explains Martijn Zijlstra, Sales Manager at Verkerk Healthcare. He believes this ability to centralise and adapt data to each user’s specific role allows the system “to promote more personalised healthcare and more efficient working”.

Technology adopted from the world of finance

The technological basis for NOVI is tried and tested. It has existed in the financial sector since 2012, and Verkerk Healthcare has drawn on 40 years of expertise in healthcare technology in adapting it for the medical context. Today, the platform is in service at several Dutch healthcare establishments, with further rollouts in the pipeline.

“NOVI is now a benchmark in the sector,” says Martijn Zijlstra. “This is not an isolated application, but a global, modular, scalable solution.”

The solution’s functionality was designed for healthcare professionals and their patients or residents. It offers: centralised access to data tailored to each user’s profile; fluid integration with electronic client dossiers (ECD), home automation systems and identity servers; real-time overview of residents’ well-being; automation of recurring tasks to reduce the administrative burden; and secure access via MFA (multi-factor authentication) and SSO (single sign-on) in compliance with the NENEN7510information security standard and the EU NIS2 directive.

“The system as a whole promotes safer healthcare, improved monitoring of residents and stronger collaboration between professionals,” saysMartijn Zijlstra .

A tailored rollout

Thanks to its modular architecture, NOVI can be implemented gradually whatever the type of establishment, its existing infrastructure, or the level of care provided. This flexibility allows healthcare teams to adopt it at their own pace and ensures compatibility with their existing tools.

“Transparency is essential. It creates a climate of trust, which is key to the acceptance of these tools.”

Unlike traditional systems focused on verbal communication, such as DECT (digital enhanced cordless telecommunications), NOVI offers a unified platform for alarms, triage, communication, reports and notifications. This can reduce the number of devices used while offering a comprehensive real-time overview of a resident’s status.

“Care providers can find all the relevant information in seconds, make better decisions and devote more of their time to hands-on care,” says Martijn Zijlstra.

A keen focus on confidentiality

Data protection considerations are central to the design of NOVI. No sensitive data is stored on the platform – instead, it serves as a gateway to the source systems. Access is strictly limited to authorised users, and all practices are compliant with the GDPR (European Union) and NEN security standards (Netherlands).

“Transparency is essential,” explains Martijn Zijlstra. “Residents and their families are informed of the data and technology in use. This creates a climate of trust, which is key to the acceptance of these tools. NOVI connects, simplifies and reinforces healthcare. It’s a future-oriented solution.”
