Industrial sovereignty, compliance with CO2 emission reduction targets and job opportunities are just some of the many issues at stake in reindustrialising the regions. While digital technology can pave the way for a cleaner, more energy efficient and more flexible industrial renewal, it is unlikely that the Industry 4.0 model can be applied meaningfully to all regions and communities. Indeed, field surveys and historical studies show that, as far as industrialisation is concerned, the success of revitalisation or expansion projects is determined as much by local skills and culture as by the industrial past. We look at a selection of research studies that shed light on the contrasting trends in the industrial renaissance.
