With 75% of unconnected homes in the world situated in Africa, West African countries have set themselves ambitious goals to extend electricity access to the whole region. But in areas located far from the central grid, where populations are often dispersed across large distances, the challenge of carrying out electrification projects at an acceptable cost is enormous.

Some 530 million people are thought to be affected throughout the continent.
