Suppose that, in future, megacities were to grow not upwards – but downwards! Taking the opposite tack from the rush to build skyscrapers, cities are discovering the potential of their sub-soil. The second “Reinventing Paris” call for projects in the French capital, dedicated to its underground, inspired the architects. Winners included AérogArt (Dominique Perrault), a project within the Invalides station; Immeuble Inversé, by Sogaris, which will reinvent the Grenier Saint-Lazare car park; and La Cité Universelle, to be built on the site currently occupied by the towed-vehicle pound in Pantin.
