Omexom and Twence have reached a new milestone in their partnership in the Netherlands, with the commissioning of Europe’s largest CO₂ capture installation and construction of a new green gas factory. These two key projects will strengthen the region’s energy autonomy and accelerate the transition toward a circular economy.

For many years, Omexom has been maintaining high-voltage and mains-voltage networks on an industrial site for Twence, a Dutch company specialising in waste management, waste-to-energy, and production of circular raw materials. The associated learning curve has equipped the VINCI Energies infrastructure brand to effectively manage a large-scale project to provide all electrical infrastructure for Twence’s new CO₂ capture installation in Hengelo, in the eastern part of the Netherlands, which is the largest such facility in Europe.

“Completed in early 2024, the installation captures 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ a year, making it the largest operational installation in Europe,” says Wim Spaan, Senior Client Manager at Omexom Nederland. Having worked alongside Twence for three decades, Wim Spaan is keen to emphasise the scale of the mission entrusted to Omexom, ranging from high-voltage equipment to mains-voltage distribution, along with the installation of 230 metres of cables and management of the testing.

As Installation Manager for the project, Wim Spaan was responsible for electrical safety across the entire site: “I carried out the disconnections, determined the trip voltage, and oversaw the testing.” The challenges were numerous, including restricted spaces, heavy 10 kV cables, a tight timeframe and compliance with stringent Dutch standards. But the results are excellent, and the installation is fully operational and facilitating CO₂ reuse, notably in greenhouse horticulture, where the gas is used to accelerate plant growth.

A new green gas plant for 1,700 households

Building on this success, Twence also selected Omexom for its new project – a green gas plant capable of powering 1,700 households through the transformation of local organic waste. Work on the plant began in July 2025.

For this installation, designed to be operational 98% of the time, a stable supply of electricity is essential. Omexom is providing a compact transformer station connected to the existing medium-voltage network, which will ensure a secure, reliable supply.

For Mateusz Van Strien, Business Unit General Manager at Omexom Nederland, the continuity of this partnership can be attributed to a shared vision: “Twence is a key customer for us, with a service and maintenance contract for high-voltage activities. When the opportunity for this project presented itself, we recognised that it was a perfect match for Twence’s ambitions in terms of sustainable development and for Omexom’s commitment to promoting energy transition and providing innovative, reliable solutions.”

Beyond the technical aspects, these projects epitomise a fluid cooperation based on trust and an in-depth understanding of the Twence installations. Together, the two partner businesses are showing that the energy transition is built step by step, from the electrical infrastructure to the local reuse of resources.
