What are the keys to success employed by the 25 cities with the largest number of electric vehicles? The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) studied these cities to identify the best practices and conditions enabling their mayors to foster growing use of clean cars and buses and help pioneer the energy transition. The availability and variety of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, with or without financial incentives, are one of the key factors influencing consumer choice. Charging infrastructure is another. Compared with the rest of the world, these 25 cities collectively have the largest number of fast and regular charge points per capita. They have also created strategic plans that may include subsidies and partnerships with energy companies. Lastly, they have introduced building codes that require “green” charging infrastructure or wiring to enable easy installation.
