Unlike electrochemical batteries which store ions and electrons, quantum batteries store the energy of photons. These charge more quickly as their size increases thanks to quantum effects like entanglement and superabsorption. In the short and medium term they will not be able to power large-scale objects like electric vehicles but they could improve the efficiency of solar cells. And within three or four years they could serve as small off-grid energy sources and power IoT devices.
