The city of Stockholm plans to capture a massive 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ every year from 2028 onward, while continuing to supply its residents with urban heating and cooling. And the secret behind this large-scale capture? A biomass power plant that will convert carbon dioxide into liquid for transportation to a permanent storage site beneath the sea bed, where it will mineralise and fuse with the bedrock. Selected by the European Union Innovation Fund, this project in the capital city will also receive finance from the Swedish government and private companies through the carbon offsetting scheme.
