Some bacteria can generate energy from sunlight, astonishing right? Drawing on the principle of photosynthesis specific to cyanobacteria – organisms found in lakes and seas – three researchers from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have developed a promising electricity production system whereby the energy generated by live bacteria is converted into hydrogen. The researchers believe that the system’s stability opens up the possibility of a new, environmentally-friendly source of energy.
