Smart Grid standardisation cuts across energy and digital technologies and requires a combined effort by both sectors, which have so far not been in the habit of working in tandem. At both global and European level, many initiatives are being taken. But standardisation is an arduous exercise since it involves reaching technical consensus among competitors. This is especially difficult in the case of Smart Grids, where standardisation requires convergence of the technical and industrial strategies of the energy and ICT industry players – two separate universes with different technological cultures, different approaches to standardisation and different regulatory systems.
