Long hailed as the technological revolution of the future, the market for connected devices and appliances is experiencing a sharp decline, as shown by the sales figures. Research and advisory company Gartner predicted in 2017 that the number of connected devices and appliances would reach 20 billion by 2020 – far off the actual figure of 9.4 billion.

How come there is such a gap between forecasts and the reality on the ground? One of the answers lies in the environmental and ethical issue of a fully connected world.
