Technology is the globalisation driver. But how does this work? There are five keys to understanding the forces involved. First, globalisation does not track progress in technology but proceeds in fits and starts. Second, global systems and standards matter more than individual technologies. Third, the global village is built on digital technology, and those with access to it are becoming both more global and more local at the same time. Also worth noting is the fact that the current industrial revolution is reshaping power at all levels – economic, scientific, and political. Lastly, technologies are not neutral and it is up to us to ensure that globalisation 4.0 is human-centred.
